Be honest: how often do you find yourself working later than you planned? Or maybe you can’t stop thinking about work, even after you’re done for the day?
Nowadays, the boundaries between work and home life are totally blurred, especially for those of us who work from home! Without that physical separation of a traditional office, it’s too easy to find yourself working late into the evening, never fully disconnecting from your professional responsibilities.
Why should we worry about this? Cuz this constant overlap between the personal and professional can lead to burnout, stress, and a little time for self-care. In essence, a lack of balance prevents you from being your most productive self.
So when you want more work-from-home-life balance, how do you ensure a clear distinction between work and personal life? You follow a workday shutdown ritual.
“Stressed souls need the reassuring rhythm of self-nurturing rituals.” – Sarah Ban Breathnach
This intentional end-of-workday routine helps signal to your mind and body that the workday is over. And as I’ve personally experienced, this allows you to fully transition into your personal time, without work bleeding into the night.
Not only does this ritual reduce stress and improve sleep, but it also boosts overall productivity since you empower yourself to start each new workday fresh and focused.
All of this is why this blog explains the workday shutdown ritual plus provides personal examples and a step-by-step guide on how to create your very own, tailored to your needs.
By following these steps, you’ll reclaim your evenings, enhance your well-being, and live that balanced, fulfilling work-from-home life you dream of.

HOW A WORKDAY SHUTDOWN RITUAL IMPROVES BALANCE
Let’s just jump right into it, shall we?
A workday shutdown ritual is a set of deliberate actions taken at the end of your workday to help you transition from work mode to personal time. Think of it as a routine to end your workday.
Now this ritual is particularly beneficial for those of us who work from home since we often find the boundaries between work and personal lives blurred. That being said, every person who works would absolutely benefit from implementing one.
And the main reason a workday shutdown ritual is so beneficial is because when you consistently follow your end of workday routine, you signal to your brain that the workday is over. This allows you to mentally and physically detach from work-related tasks and stresses.
It’s clear that a shutdown ritual can significantly enhance your overall well-being, but let’s dig a little deeper.
“Any ritual is an opportunity for transformation.” – Starhawk
A shutdown ritual reduces stress by providing a clear endpoint to the workday. This prevents the tendency to overwork or work later into the night. A shutdown ritual also improves sleep quality since you create a buffer period between work and rest, which allows your mind to unwind before bedtime.
I can’t forget to mention that a well-structured shutdown ritual can also boost your productivity. By organizing and prepping for the following day, you can start each morning with clarity and focus rather than feeling overwhelmed by unfinished tasks.
A workday shutdown ritual is NOT just about closing your laptop. It’s about creating a series of steps that gradually ease you out of your work mindset. These steps can include activities like journaling about your day, planning for tomorrow, and tidying up your workspace – but more about that later.
Point is, these actions help create a mental and physical separation from work, making it easier to engage fully in your personal life once the workday is over.
And that right there is the essence of balance.
STEPS TO CREATE A WORKDAY SHUTDOWN RITUAL
So now that you get why a workday shutdown ritual is so gosh darn essential for work-from-home-life balance, let’s talk about how to actually create one.
Here’s the steps to create and implement a workday shutdown ritual tailored to your specific needs and preferences:
- Assess your needs
- Choose empowering activities
- Set clear boundaries
- Write it down
- Experiment and adjust
- Commit to consistency
Now let me guide you through each step!
ASSESS YOUR NEEDS
Something I always say is that awareness is power. Which is why the first step is to identify your main sources of work-related stress and how they affect your personal life.
To do that, ask yourself questions like:
- Are you finding it hard to switch off from work?
- Do you feel overwhelmed by unfinished tasks?
- Do you get anxious when you don’t know what’s coming tomorrow morning?
Understanding your stressors will help you design a ritual that actually addresses them.
By the way, take your time with this step and be honest. Whatever you realize, it’s only for you to know. After all, you can’t change what you don’t know.
CHOOSE EMPOWERING ACTIVITIES
Once you know what stress you out, it’s time to figure out what helps you unwind and clearly signify the end of your workday.
I want you to think about what activities help you feel relaxed and accomplished. Some examples:
- Journaling
- Planning for tomorrow
- Decluttering
- Meditating
Knowing what makes you feel at ease will guide you in selecting the right activities for your workday shutdown ritual. Cuz what’s the point of following a ritual if it doesn’t improve your mood?
The whole purpose of this step is to personalize the shutdown ritual to fit your preferences and lifestyle.
So if you enjoy physical activity, maybe it’s about incorporating a short workout or stretching routine at the end of your workday.
Or if you prefer quiet time, reading or listening to music might be more up your alley.
And again, take some time to think about this. Also remember that your ritual is NOT set in stone, so it can change and adapt as your preferences and lifestyle do.
Just reflect on what’ll work for you now, in this current life stage.
SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES
Now before you actually start practicing your workday shutdown ritual, it’s really really important to establish specific working hours and commit to them.
Why?
Well, if you’re trying to signal an end to your workday, you need to know when that end is.
Consistency is also key. In order for your mind and body to recognize that the routine means it’s the end of the workday, then you gotta be doing at roughly the same time every day.
It’s about training yourself.
“A daily ritual is a way of saying, ‘I’m voting for myself, I’m taking care of myself.'” – Mariel Hemingway
I also highly suggest designating a physical space in your home exclusively for work. This could be a separate room or a specific corner.
For example, when I lived in my one bedroom apartment, I made a section of my living room my “office” and only used it when I was working. And now that I live in a two-bedroom, that second room is my office and a section of the living room is my boyfriend’s “office.”
Why is this helpful?
Cuz when you leave this space at the end of the day, it signals to your brain that work is over. And the opposite happens at the start of your workday, too! So when you enter the space, it signals to your brain that work is beginning.
Setting these kind of super clear boundaries makes committing to them a lot easier.
Don’t forget that you can download your very own ritual to put all that you’re learning into real practice! Just click the button below, enter your info, and check your email for the FREE 5-Minute Workday Shutdown Ritual one pager!
WRITE IT DOWN
So now that you know what stress you out, what helps you unwind, when you want to end work, and where you’ll work (phew!), it’s time to put it all together.
Which means that next up, I want you to write your workday shutdown ritual down in a detailed manner. But why?
Writing it down helps solidify your commitment and serves as a reminder of the steps in your ritual that you plan to follow.
Here’s how you can write it down:
First, grab a blank piece of paper or open a blank document.
Then outline each activity you’d like to do in the order that you intend to do them. Be specific about the timing and duration each of your steps takes so you create a truly structured routine.
By the way, I dive a lot deeper into activities that you can do later in this blog, so you can keep reading then come back to this step if you need some more inspiration!
Once you have your ritual written down, keep it somewhere visible! Maybe you’ll keep it on your desk or as a note on your computer. I personally add mine to my calendar so I always have time for it and get a notification reminder when it’s time to do it.
The point is to help yourself a little bit. Having a constant visual reminder helps you stay on track and actually follow your ritual.
Or if this feels like too much, then go ahead and just use my ritual! Click the button below then enter your info to download the FREE 5-Minute Workday Shutdown Ritual that I use to end every workday!
EXPERIMENT & ADJUST
Now that your workday shutdown ritual is written down, it’s official! Next, it’s about practicing it.
Start by committing to following your written shutdown ritual for just one work week. Let’s say you do it Monday – Friday. On Friday, you gotta reflect and ask yourself:
- What helped?
- What didn’t help?
It’s really important to have a beginner’s mindset and to be flexible. Which means that you gotta be willing to experiment with and tweak your ritual as needed.
For anything that didn’t help, try different activities and see what does. It’s essential to find a routine that feels natural and effective in helping you transition from work to personal time.
“We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own to-do list.” – Michelle Obama
I also want you to keep something in mind: every week will not be the same. What works one not-so-busy week might need adjustments for the following super busy week, and that’s okay!
Remember, your ritual isn’t set in stone. Just like it can adapt as your lifestyle changes, it can also adapt as work demands and personal circumstances change week to week.
COMMIT TO CONSISTENCY
Even if your shutdown ritual changes from time to time, making the act of doing your ritual a daily habit should be the priority.
The more consistent you are, the more your mind and body will come to recognize these activities as signals that the workday is over.
That’s why I also suggest having a shorter version of your ritual ready to go for times when you don’t have that much time. That way you can still actually do your ritual and signal to yourself that work is over even when you have a lot going on.
And I always suggest also outlining a shorter ritual just like how you outlined your main ritual. Don’t skip this step! Having a backup plan is how you ensure consistency since it eliminates the excuse of not having enough time.
This is a big reason why I’ve made my FREE 5-Minute Workday Shutdown Ritual so short – so we always have time for it. So if you haven’t yet, go ahead and click the button below, enter your info, then check your inbox for the free ritual!
Don’t forget that you’re reading this blog cuz you’re tired of feeling off balance. So I want to drive home the importance of routine in maintaining a healthy work-from-home-life balance:
In essence, a consistent shutdown ritual helps create a sense of control and closure, which prepares you for a restful evening and a productive next day.
Creating a workday shutdown ritual tailored to your needs can significantly improve your ability to separate work from personal life. It’s a proactive step towards managing stress and enhancing overall well-being while working from home since you’re finally taking control over your schedule.
WHAT TO DO DURING A WORKDAY SHUTDOWN RITUAL
So now that you have the core steps to create your workday shutdown ritual, let’s get into what you can actually do in your routine to mindfully signal the end of your workday.
Before I go through a list of the kinds of activities that you can do, I want to first share my own shutdown ritual with you to give you some inspiration!
MY WORKDAY SHUTDOWN RITUAL
It took some time to really figure out which activities I liked doing and which didn’t really serve me. After lots of experimentation, adjustments, and trial and error, I’ve been practicing this shutdown ritual for over a year now (at the time of my writing this blog).
It’s successfully gotten rid of my Sunday Scaries, aligns my goals with my actions, and majorly reduced stress since I no longer think about work after my working hours. My entire ritual only takes me about 15 minutes to do, but I also have a shortened version.
“Light tomorrow with today.” – Elizabeth Barrett Browning
So, as a productivity coach, here’s what I do during my own workday shutdown ritual:
- Journal about hitting or not hitting my daily goal
- Journal about my daily wins
- Outline my tasks for tomorrow and time blocked schedule
- Close all computer tabs expect for what I need to do my first task tomorrow
- Declutter my workspace
- Push in my office chair and turn out the lights
And here’s my shortened version of my workday shutdown ritual:
- Journal about my daily wins
- Outline my tasks for tomorrow and time blocked schedule
- Close all computer tabs expect for what I need to do my first task tomorrow
- Push in my office chair and turn out the lights
Why do I do these activities? Let me explain.
JOURNALING
Journaling at the end of the workday allows you to reflect on your achievements and challenges. This practice really helps me acknowledge the progress I made (which I call my daily wins) and clarifies any areas of improvement – both of which are essential for effective goal achievement.
So how can you journal quickly yet effectively?
Write about whether you met your daily goals (which you should outline in the morning/at the start of your workday) and take note of any small or big wins or accomplishments from the day. This could be completing a challenging task, learning something new, or making progress on a long-term project.
Reflect on what went well and what didn’t, and consider how you can improve tomorrow – even if just by 1%.
OUTLINE TASKS & SCHEDULE
I love love love time blocking. If you don’t know what it is, it’s the process of scheduling specific blocks of time for different tasks. It’s a time management method that helps you prioritize and manage your workload more efficiently.
So at the end of your workday, you can outline your tasks that you gotta do tomorrow and then schedule them. Allocate time blocks for each task based on its priority and estimated duration.
Prepping like this a day ahead of time ensures you start the next day with a clear plan, reducing morning stress and increasing overall productivity.
CLOSE TABS
Having numerous tabs open can be incredibly distracting and overwhelming – especially for someone with ADHD like me!
That’s why closing unnecessary tabs helps create a focused digital environment.
So try closing all tabs and apps except for those needed for your first task tomorrow. This habit not only declutters your digital workspace but also sets a clear starting point for the next day.
DECLUTTER YOUR WORKSPACE
What signals a fresh start to each day better than a clean and organized workspace?
A decluttered environment can reduce stress and increase your ability to focus more than you think.
“Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. The second is only part of the first.” – Anna Quindlen
Take a minute or less to just tidy up your desk. Put away any items that aren’t needed anymore, organize loose papers and supplies, and make your workspace inviting for the next day.
PUSH IN CHAIR & TURN OUT LIGHTS
Simple physical actions like pushing in your office chair and turning out the lights can reinforce the end of the workday. Turning out the lights can especially be a powerful signal that work is over cuz who wants to work in the dark?
These actions create a mental shift, helping you literally move from work to personal time. Proper lighting also affects your circadian rhythm, so lowering the light tells your brain that sleepy time is coming soon.

EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES FOR A WORKDAY SHUTDOWN RITUAL
Remember that your shutdown ritual can include literally whatever activities you want, as long as they help you unwind and say goodnight to work.
So now that you know what I do during my own ritual, here’s some more workday shutdown ritual activities to consider:
- Exercise or stretching
- Meditation
- Read a book or listen to music
- Prep tomorrow’s meals
- Spend time with family or pets
EXERCISE OR STRETCHING
We all know the benefits to physical activity, so I don’t need to drive that home. But I do want to mention that engaging in exercise or a stretching routine after a workday can drastically help relieve tension, reduce stress, and improve your overall mood.
Moving your body also promotes better sleep, which is so crucial for maintaining productivity and well-being.
So maybe go for a short walk, do some yoga, or even a quick but more intense workout session.
You don’t have to go big here. Just a few minutes of stretching can help relax your muscles and clear your mind.
MEDITATION
Practicing mindfulness or meditation can help you mentally detach from work and foster a sense of calm within you. Meditation or breathwork improves focus and emotional regulation, making it a whole lot easier to unwind – especially after a long day.
I personally love guided meditations, and use the Headspace app every morning and night, so I highly suggest checking it out! You can also try deep-breathing exercises or a simple mindfulness practice where you focus on your breath or a calming mantra for a few minutes.
Again, keep it simple and short. Trying to meditate for 10 minutes off the bat will only cause frustration if it isn’t something your used to, so take your time in building this habit.
READ A BOOK OR LISTEN TO MUSIC
Reading a good book or listening to your favorite artist can be an effective and fun way to signal the end of your workday. Why?
“You can’t do a good job if your job is all you do.” – Katie Thurms
Cuz these kind of activities can help shift your focus from work-related thoughts to something enjoyable and relaxing. You can choose something that you find soothing, such as a fiction book, poetry or even instrumental music. Just try to avoid things that could be related to work, like a business book for example, cuz that’s too stimulating to wind down with.
By the way, I know I only mentioned reading a book or listening to music, but you could also do things like color in a coloring book, knit, or whatever other leisure activities help you relax.
PREP TOMORROW’S MEALS
Preparing meals for the next day can save you a whole lot of time tomorrow plus can drastically reduce stress in the mornings.
When you plan your food ahead of time, you can focus on eating healthy instead of relying on your cravings. This can also positively impact of your energy levels and productivity.
So test out planning and preparing ingredients for breakfast or lunch. You can also batch-cook meals that can easily be reheated, which I personally love to do on Sundays. It’s really nice have nutritious options ready in the fridge whenever I need them.
SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY OR PETS
If you work from home, you can spend the whole day in isolation without realizing it. That’s why social interactions and bonding time is so good for your mental health.
Spending time with loved ones or pets can provide emotional support and strengthen your relationships. It’s a wonderful way to decompress and enjoy the personal side of your life.
So try playing games (my boyfriend and I are currently obsessed with backgammon), doing puzzles, having a family dinner, or simply taking your dog for a walk or to a dog park.
These interactions help reinforce the separation between work and life, which helps you actually put work away for the evening.
Adding any of these example activities into your workday shutdown ritual can make that transition from work to personal time that much smoother. By experimenting with different options, you can create a personalized routine that best suits your lifestyle and helps you maintain a genuine work-from-home-life balance.
