What do you think of when you hear the words, “being productive”?

You may think of something like “doing more,” “getting a lot done,” “checking off to do’s,” or “getting it done in less time.”

And you’re not alone.

In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of productivity often brings images of relentless hustle. Of striving to do more, accomplish more, and be more. We live in a culture that glorifies busyness, equating it with success and output.

Yet beneath the surface of this endless pursuit lies a really troubling truth: the incessant drive to do more can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and a pervasive sense of inadequacy.

Our society has lost sight of what it truly means to be effective, efficient, and successful. How we currently understand productivity fails to acknowledge the importance of holistic well-being and fulfillment. “Getting a lot done” is a narrow perspective that values quantity over quality, leaving little room for rest, reflection, and genuine connection.

“We have outstretched our personal boundaries and forgotten that true happiness comes from living an authentic life fueled with a sense of purpose and balance.” – Dr. Kathleen Hall

But there IS a different way. We can redefine productivity in a way that prioritizes not just what we do, but how we do it.

What if productivity isn’t about doing more, but doing better? About aligning our actions with our values, passions, and purpose? Can you imagine how much happier we’d be?

So in this blog, we’ll explore the pitfalls of the hustle culture we seem to be stuck in, plus the limitations of the current definition of productivity. Then I’ll explain a new way of thinking about productivity by outlining what I call the 3 Pillars of Productivity: motivation, focus, and flow. Plus I’ll give you my favorite and super simple tricks for boosting each in a mindful way.

By understanding and harnessing these pillars, we can cultivate a more mindful approach to productivity. An approach that fosters holistic success and well-being rather than burnout, overwhelm, and self-doubt.

Ready to leave this relentless pursuit behind?

P.S. I made a FREE customizable checklist to help you boost your productivity mindfully. CONSEQUENCES OF THE HUSTLE & LIMITATIONS OF PRODUCTIVITY

In recent years, the hustle culture is everywhere, permeating literally every aspect of our lives. From social media influencers glamorizing “the grind” to corporate environments promoting the hustle mentality, we’re constantly bombarded with messages that equate success with non-stop activity.

The hustle culture glorifies busyness as a badge of honor, perpetuating the myth that working harder / longer hours and sacrificing our well-being is the key to achievement.

But why?

Well, underlying the hustle culture is this flawed definition of productivity. According to Britannica, being productive simply means, “getting a lot done.”

This definition prioritizes quantity over quality, and output over well-being.

The Productivity Flow consequences of the hustle culture and limitations of productivity

If we think of productivity as doing more, then we’re going to act in that way and try to do more all of the time. Because in this sense, success is measured by how much we accomplish in a given timeframe – often at the expense of our mental, emotional, and physical health.

Yet this relentless pressure to do more in less time leaves us feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and perpetually behind, fueling a vicious cycle of burnout and impostor syndrome.

Not to mention that the constant comparison with others’ seemingly perfect lives and endless achievements only exacerbates our feelings of inadequacy. We fall into the trap of believing that if we’re not constantly hustling and achieving, we’re somehow falling short.

This toxic mindset erodes our self-esteem and diminishes our sense of worth, creating another vicious cycle of striving for an unattainable standard of success.

But the consequences of the hustle culture really do extend beyond mere exhaustion and self-doubt. They take a profound toll on our mental health and overall well-being.

Chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout have become rampant in our society. I believe this is fueled by the relentless pressure to keep up with the demands of the hustle culture.

“It’s also our collective delusion that overwork and burnout are the prices we must pay in order to succeed.” – Arianna Huffington

Don’t forget that the pursuit of productivity often comes at the expense of other aspects of our lives that are essential for our well-being. Some examples: relationships, hobbies, and self-care. We sacrifice sleep, leisure time, and meaningful connections in pursuit of our goals, only to find ourselves feeling unfulfilled and disconnected – even if we hit our goals.

All of this is honestly why I do what I do (productivity life coaching). I’m on a mission to reframe productivity so it empowers us to move forward rather than overwhelm us and keep us stuck. That’s also why I’ve completely redefined productivity and choose to focus on practicing the 3 pillars that we’re about to dive into.

REDEFINING PRODUCTIVITY: MY 3 PILLARS APPROACH

To truly have holistic success, we gotta leave the traditional definition of productivity behind us. If we continue to think about productivity as “getting a lot done,” then we’ll inevitably race to do more until we hit a wall. It’s just not sustainable.

So instead of focusing on results and sheer output, let’s instead focus on embodying what I call the 3 Pillars of Productivity:

  1. Motivation
  2. Focus
  3. Flow

By embracing these 3 pillars and integrating them into your daily life, you can cultivate a more mindful and purposeful approach to success. Rather than succumbing to the hustle culture’s relentless pressure to do more, you can prioritize quality over quantity, purpose over perfection, and well-being over “the grind.”

MOTIVATION

What drives us to be productive? Our motivation.

That’s why the first productivity pillar is motivation. Because yearning for the benefits that we can get if we do the damn thing is the driving force behind our actions and aspirations.

“Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.” – Anne Sweeney

Motivation is not merely about setting goals and deadlines, though. It’s more about understanding our values, passions, and purpose. It’s our “why” behind what we do and how we do it.

When you’re motivated, you know what the potential benefits are, and you want them. So you work to get them. It’s actually as simple as that.

When we’re motivated by a genuine desire to make a difference, achieve meaningful goals, and live in alignment with our values, our productivity becomes infused with purpose and passion.

FOCUS

As someone with ADHD, I really do get that maintaining focus can be a big fricken challenge. Especially when you take into account how fast paced our world really is.

Distractions are at every turn, constantly pulling us away from the task at hand and hindering our productivity.

The Productivity Flow redefining productivity 3 pillars of productivity

Yet true productivity requires the ability to focus our attention and energy on the present moment. To be productive, you gotta channel your efforts toward your most important priorities.

That’s why I define focus as, “the process of not giving your power away to external or internal distractions.”

Because we all have the ability to focus innately within us. It’s just about harnessing that superpower effectively and whenever you need to.

FLOW

We all know what it feels like to be in a flow state, particularly with tasks that we enjoy.

Being in the flow is being in a state of optimal experience, typically characterized by deep concentration, effortless action, and a heightened sense of immersion and enjoyment.

I simply define it as, “sustained, easy effort over time.” Yet I want to point something out here: even though I say “easy” I don’t mean that the task itself is going to be easy. Rather, it’ll feel easier to go through the motions and jump any hurdles with grace.

When we’re in a flow state, we experience a profound sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. We can lose track of time and ego as we become fully absorbed in our work.

Cultivating flow requires finding the right balance between challenge and skill. This allows us to stretch our abilities and unlock our fullest potential.

HOW MOTIVATION, FOCUS & FLOW WORK TOGETHER

To truly understand how the 3 pillars of productivity can lead you to holistic success, you first have to understand how motivation, focus, and flow work together.

These 3 pillars of productivity don’t exist in isolation. They instead complement and reinforce one another, forming the foundation that holistic success is built on.

Motivation serves as the catalyst for action, fueling our desire to pursue meaningful goals and make a positive impact in both your life and the world. When we’re motivated by a sense of purpose and passion rather than a sense of racing to get it done in less time, our actions are infused with energy and enthusiasm.

And this propels us towards our desired outcomes.

“Working on the right thing is probably more important than working hard.” – Caterina Fake

Focus is the key to channeling our energy and attention towards our most important priorities. By cultivating mindfulness and eliminating distractions, we can sharpen our focus and immerse ourselves fully into the task at hand. Of course, this maximizes our productivity and effectiveness, leading us that much closer to our goals.

Now flow represents the pinnacle of productivity since we can experience effortless action, deep concentration, and a great sense of fulfillment. When we’re in the flow, our skills and abilities are fully engaged. We’re able to perform at our peak and achieve extraordinary results with much greater ease and even a smile on our face.

Next, we’re going to dive into some actionable tips and tricks for you to boost your motivation, focus, and flow whenever you need.

TIPS TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY MINDFULLY

Whenever I’m feeling unproductive, it’s because I’m missing at least 1 of the 3 pillars. That’s why the pillars also double as my formula for boosting your personal productivity mindfully. I’ve oh so cleverly named this the Personal Productivity Formula.

In essence, boosting your motivation, boosting your focus, and boosting your flow is how to boost your productivity.

Motivation + focus + flow = productivity.

Which means that if you want to boost your productivity mindfully, you should focus on nurturing and cultivating motivation, focus, and flow in your daily life.

So here’s some practical ways to do just that.

HOW TO BOOST MOTIVATION

Firstly, let’s talk about the big picture. It’s really important to connect with your values, passions, and purpose.

And that can be hard to do if you don’t know where exactly you’re heading. So if you don’t have a vision for your future yet, check out this blog then come on back.

Why?

So you can set meaningful goals that resonate with your deepest desires and aspirations. So you can remind yourself of the reasons behind your actions whenever you feel demotivated or discouraged. So your productivity becomes infused with passion and purpose.

Now let’s get into the other side of motivation. The side that’s about the day to day grind.

The Productivity Flow how to boost motivation redefining productivity

You’re going to have off days when you cannot find motivation to do the hard task or even anything. For example, you’ll naturally experience some dread or procrastination. It’s part of the human experience – it’s not because you don’t have drive or are lazy.

But how do you boost your motivation in these moments when you just don’t have any? You have to get curious and find it.

You have to become aware of all of the benefits that you can get if you actually do the thing (whatever it is). Basically you need an understanding of and a desire for your potential benefits.

I always ask myself, “What’s in it for me?”

Honestly, there IS always something in it for you, even if not obvious at first. Maybe you can:

  • Get creative / have fun with it
  • Improve a system, template, or tool
  • Learn how to delegate better
  • Earn money
  • Feel good about following through and being the person you know you can be
  • Practice patience or gratitude
  • Create an incentive or treat to give yourself when done

Now if you really cannot figure out what’s in it for you, then it’s probably someone else’s priority masking as your own. That means it’s time to assess if you should even be doing it.

“Motivation comes from working on things we care about.” – Sheryl Sandberg

Now let’s say I’m about to start a task that I’ve been procrastinating and really don’t feel like doing. I’ll take out my journal and make a list of all of the benefits that I could get. Aka I write down my answer to that question, “What’s in it for me?”

I like having my list on paper and nearby so I can refer to it if my motivation fades throughout the task or day. It’s really helpful in reminding you why you’re even doing it and in shifting your perspective to look on the positive side.

HOW TO BOOST FOCUS

When talking about boosting focus, we’re really talking about eliminating distractions.

I find that there’s 2 types of distractions: the external ones, and the internal ones.

The Productivity Flow how to boost focus redefining productivity

External distractions are those interruptions that we naturally think of, like notifications, a cluttered workspace, people literally interrupting you, etc.

To eliminate them, we first gotta acknowledge that they’re are bound to happen. Let’s not dread it, but expect it and prepare for it.

So before you dive into any task, do one or all of these simple things to help eliminate external distractions:

  • Turn off notifications
  • Declutter your workspace (both physical and digital)
  • Let others know your availability so they don’t bother you when you’re not available

I also always like to have several designated blocks throughout my day to tend to any interruptions or distractions that were incoming. I call this my buffer block. It gets rid of the pressure to tend to the distraction as soon as it happens because you know you have time to tend to it during your buffer block. And cuz you don’t shift your attention, you automatically boost your focus.

“Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management. Balance means making choices and enjoying those choices.” – Betsy Johnson

Now internal distractions are those interruptions that happen within you, whether it be your negative thoughts/self-talk, emotions, or physical feelings.

These kind of distractions are a lot harder to catch, so focus on preventing them from happening. Try one or all of these simple things to eliminate internal distractions:

  • Breathwork or meditations
    • I always start my day with a meditation, then do some belly breathing or a body scan before challenging tasks to help get my headspace right.
    • When you train your mind to be present in the moment, you can reduce distractions, increase self-awareness, and enhance your ability to focus on the task at hand!
  • Noting negative thoughts and feelings
    • Noting is just the process of labeling your thoughts as thoughts, and feelings as feelings. It’s an effective way to distance yourself from the negativity and become proactive instead of reactive.
    • I honestly try to note negativity literally all day long – before, during, and after tasks.

And similarly to that buffer block I described above, I also always commit to my time blocked schedule before I begin my day. Meaning I know when my deep work blocks are coming up, and I promise myself that I’ll stay focused throughout it. And when I do follow through, it feels damn good! Which helps me want to do it again.

The important thing to remember about your focus is that it’s a superpower already within you. It’s just about harnessing it effectively.

HOW TO BOOST FLOW

The cool thing about my Personal Productivity Formula is that when you can find your motivation and harness your focus, you can fall into that flow state a lot more naturally.

But it won’t always be immediate. Especially with those tasks that you just don’t enjoy (cuz let’s be real: we all have those!)

The Productivity Flow how to get into the flow redefining productivity

So getting into the flow is all about creating an optimal environment for it. Here’s some tips to do just that:

  • Create an action plan: break tasks down into baby steps so you have a workflow that you can just flow right through
  • Batch tasks: do the same kind of tasks at the same time of day during the week
    • This trains your brain to get into that flow state like clockwork
  • Listen to ambient music or white noise to help harness concentration
  • Use the Pomodoro Technique: work for 25-30 minutes, take a 10-15 minute break and get up and move around, then repeat
    • Getting up during that break is so key in managing your energy and maximizing your focus all day long
  • Listen to your internal clock: pay attention to when you have the most energy and do your toughest tasks then
  • Be patient: give yourself enough time to actually get into the rhythm of things

PUTTING IT TOGETHER: YOUR PRODUCTIVITY RITUAL

So now that you know about my favorite tips and tricks to boost productivity mindfully, let’s talk about how to put all of those tips together so you can shift into a productive mindset whenever you want to.

I personally always follow a ritual – which I call a Personal Productivity Ritual. But what does that mean?

“What you do everyday matters more than what you do once in a while.” – Gretchen Rubin

All a productivity ritual is is a routine you do before a task to get into a productive headspace. Let me give you an example! Here’s my productivity ritual which I do in the mornings and before bigger, harder tasks throughout the day:

  1. Meditation (morning: 15 minutes) or breathwork (the rest of the day: 1-3 minutes)
  2. Journal about my motivation by answering the question “what’s in it for me?” (1-3 minutes)
  3. Turn off notifications
  4. Declutter workspace
  5. Create an action plan
  6. Turn on music
  7. Note negative thoughts and emotions (all day long)

It’s important to note that I time block my schedule according to my internal clock, always let others know my availability when appropriate, and typically practice the Pomodoro Technique throughout the day. It’s a mix of all of the tips that work best for me.

CONCLUSION

I consider it to be my personal mission to redefine productivity for holistic success.

That’s why we talked about the pitfalls of the hustle culture and the limitations of the traditional definition of productivity. We’ve challenged the notion that success is synonymous with constant busyness and endless achievement, recognizing instead the importance of quality, purpose, and well-being in the pursuit of success.

By embracing the 3 Pillars of Productivity – motivation, focus, and flow – we can practice a new way to prioritize mindfulness, purpose, and fulfillment.

We now know that true productivity isn’t about doing more, but about doing better. About aligning our actions with our values, passions, and purpose to create a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Mindful productivity really isn’t a destination. It’s a way of life.

It’s about cultivating a mindset of growth, resilience, and self-awareness as well as embracing the journey of self-improvement.

So I challenge all of us to nurture our motivation, sharpen our focus, and find flow in everything we do. Let’s prioritize well-being and fulfillment over mere achievement and embrace the path towards becoming the best versions of ourselves.

It’s time to let go of the hustle mentality and embrace a way of being that not only leads to success, but lasting happiness.
