You know what sucks? Trying to be productive during your period. Between the cramps, fatigue, and emotional rollercoasters, it’s tempting to just curl up in bed and wait it out.

But sadly, life doesn’t pause when our period starts, and sometimes we have to find ways to power through.

The good news? You don’t have to push yourself to the limit or pretend that everything’s fine. As we all know from personal experience, that just doesn’t work.

Which means that the key to being productive during your time of the month is to work with your body, not against it.

In this blog, I’ll share my 9 secrets to being productive when on your period. These tips will help you stay productive and find greater balance so you can keep moving forward without burning out. My 9 secrets are:

  1. Understand your cycle
  2. Plan to do less tasks
  3. Work with your emotions, not against them
  4. Prioritize sleep
  5. Nourish your body and mind
  6. Adjust your work environment
  7. Do some gentle movement
  8. Use technology to your advantage
  9. Practice self-compassion and flexibility

Oh, and by the way, I created a FREE “Must-Do” List just for you! It’s a shorter to do list for your big priorities that absolutely have to get done when you’re on your period. So be sure to click below and download it now!

SECRET #1: UNDERSTAND YOUR CYCLE

Let’s jump straight in, shall we?

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to really understand your menstrual cycle. I’ve actually been on a journey of learning about mine. I know it might sound like a wee bit of extra homework, but trust me, learning even just a little about yourself is a major game-changer!

When you get familiar with how your body works throughout the month, you can start to predict when you’re likely to feel energized and when you might need to take it easy.

“Menstruation is just a way of your body letting go of something that is no longer needed.” – Adriana Vandelinde

Start by tracking your cycle with an app or even just your calendar. (I personally downloaded Flo and love it!) Here’s how:

Note when your period starts, how long it lasts, and any symptoms you experience – like cramps, mood swings, or fatigue.

Over time, you’ll start to see patterns. For example, I realized that the two days before my period actually begins I’m an emotional wreck. I also learned that the first few days of my period brings along cramps, backaches, and major fatigue.

What will you notice? The Productivity Flow 9 secrets to being productive while on your period

Once you have a better handle on your cycle, you can plan your tasks accordingly. Save the big, brain-heavy projects for when you know you’ll be at your best, and allow yourself to tackle lighter tasks when you’re not feeling 100%.

Understanding your cycle isn’t just about managing your period. It’s about giving yourself the best chance to succeed every single day of the month.

SECRET #2: PLAN TO DO LESS TASKS

I already hinted at this tip above, but let’s dig deeper.

When you’re on your period, it’s okay to admit that you’re not operating at full speed – and that’s perfectly fine!

One of the smartest things you can do is to plan for fewer tasks during this time. Think of it as giving yourself permission to slow down a bit.

So instead of writing out a long to do list that feels overwhelming just looking at it, try focusing on a few key tasks that really, really need to get done.

I like to call this a “must do list” instead of a to do list.

“More was never the answer. The answer, it turned out, was always less.” – Cait Flanders

Prioritize what’s truly important and let go of the rest, at least for now. The world doesn’t end if a few things wait until you’re feeling better.

Plus, let’s say you finish you must do list and have some energy to do a bit more. Then go for it! The point is to avoid overwhelming yourself and beating yourself up for not following through.

Also, don’t be afraid to delegate where you can. If you’ve got someone who can help with a task or two, now is the time to ask.

And if something can be pushed to the next week when you’re back to your usual self, go ahead and reschedule it.

The goal here isn’t to do nothing. It’s to work smarter, not harder. By planning to do less, you’re actually setting yourself up to be more effective with the energy you do have.

The Productivity Flow free must do list

This was honestly a really hard lesson for me to learn. I always used to push myself even harder when I was on my period cuz I kind of just thought that’s what us ladies have to do.

But my therapist helped me see the truth. We need to accept that our bodies are still working even if this kind of work doesn’t pay the bills. Our bodies are going through a miracle if you think about it, so let’s give ourselves a little bit of grace.

It’s the least we deserve.

SECRET #3: WORK WITH YOUR EMOTIONS, NOT AGAINST THEM

Let’s face it: periods come with a whirlwind of emotions. I know one minute I can feel ready to take on the world, and then the next I’m sobbing over a cute puppy video.

Your emotions aren’t going away. So instead of fighting these emotional shifts, why not work with them?

First off, it’s super important to recognize that these feelings are totally normal (although it may not feel normal in the moment). Your hormones are doing their thing, and it’s completely okay to feel a bit more sensitive or moody.

“Always, emotional freedom involves choosing where to put your attention.” – Judith Orloff

The trick is to use this emotional energy in a way that benefits you.

For instance, if you’re feeling extra introspective, it might be a great time to tackle creative tasks, like brainstorming new ideas or journaling.

Or if you’re feeling more on edge, maybe dive into something that requires less emotional investment, like organizing your workspace or responding to emails.

The Productivity Flow how to be productive while on your period

It’s also helpful to practice a little extra self-compassion during this time, which is something I’m going to dive deeper into in a bit. But if you’re feeling down or overwhelmed, give yourself permission to take a break or even vent a little (like talking to a friend or just writing out your thoughts).

The bottom line? Don’t push yourself to feeling something you’re not. Instead, ride the wave and find ways to channel your emotions into your work.

You’ll be surprised at how much more productive you can be when you’re in tune with how you’re feeling.

SECRET #4: PRIORITIZE SLEEP

Now if there is ever a time to prioritize your sleep, it’s during your period.

We all know how tough it can be to get a good night’s rest when cramps, bloating, backaches, or just general discomfort are keeping you up.

But here’s the thing: sleep is your superpower when it comes to staying productive.

“The way to be more productive, more inspired, more joyful in life is getting enough sleep.” – Arianna Huffington

When you’re well rested, everything feels a little more manageable. You’re better able to focus, your mood improves, and those pesky period symptoms might even ease up a bit.

So making sleep a priority isn’t just a nice idea – it’s essential. Here’s how to do it:

Start by setting up a consistent sleep routine. Try waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends when possible. Your body LOVES routine, and this can help you get tired at night, fall asleep faster and get better quality rest.

Also, think about creating a bedtime ritual that signals to your body that it’s time to wind down. Maybe it’s a cup of herbal tea, some light stretching, or reading a few pages of a book (NOT on your phone!).

The Productivity Flow 3 tips to get control of your sleep schedule

Speaking of phones actually, try to also keep screens out of the bedroom. The blue light from phones and laptops can really mess with your ability to fall asleep. Instead, dim the lights and keep things calm and quiet both in the bedroom and beforehand. So for example, I always turn off as many apartment lights as I can after dinner so my brain knows it’s almost sleepy time.

And if you’re struggling with cramps or discomfort, consider using a heating pad or taking a warm bath before bed to help you relax. I don’t know what I’d do without my heating pad!

Just remember this: sleep is not a luxury. It’s a necessity – especially during your period. Give yourself the gift of rest, and you’ll be much better equipped to handle whatever the day throws at you.

SECRET #5: NOURISH YOUR BODY & MIND

When you’re on your period, your body is working overtime. So it’s extra important to give it the fuel it needs to keep going.

Think of nourishing your body and mind as a form of self-care that sets you up for success, even when you’re not feeling your best.

Start with what you’re eating.

Did you know that your body loses essential nutrients during your period? So it’s a good idea to focus on food that are rich in iron, magnesium, and healthy fats. Think leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and avocados.

“Your body is a temple, but only if you treat it like one.” – Astrid Alauda

Why? Cuz these foods help boost your energy and keep those annoying cravings in check. Don’t forget to hydrate, too! Water is your best friend when it comes to staying alert and avoiding that sluggish feeling.

But nourishment isn’t just about what you’re eating. It’s also about how you treat your mind.

During your period, you might feel more stressed or anxious, so it’s crucial to find ways to keep your mind calm and clear.

This could be as simple as taking a few minutes in the morning to meditate or practice deep breathing. If meditation isn’t your thing, even just a short walk outside can do wonders for your mental state.

Also, pay attention to what your body and mind are telling you. If you’re craving something comforting, don’t feel guilty about enjoying it in moderation. If you need a mental break, take it. Whether that means stepping away from your desk for a bit or indulging in a good book or your favorite show.

The goal here is balance. By nourishing your body with the right foods and giving your mind the care it needs, you’ll find it easier to stay productive and feel more in control, even on the toughest days of your cycle.

SECRET #6: ADJUST YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT

Your work environment can make a BIG difference in how you feel and how productive you are (especially when on your period!).

When you’re dealing with cramps, fatigue, or a general sense of blah, the last thing you need is an uncomfortable or chaotic workspace. So let’s talk about making some simple adjustments that can help you feel more comfortable and focused.

First off, think about your seating. If you’re spending hours at your desk, make sure your chair is supportive and comfortable. Seems obvious, but this is something we often just don’t think about!

Consider adding a cushion or a lumbar support pillow to ease any back pain you might be dealing with. And if you can, try sitting with your feet flat on the floor to help with circulation and reduce tension.

The Productivity Flow tips for being productive on period

Lighting is another thing to consider. Harsh overhead lights can be a strain on your eyes, especially if you’re already feeling tired.

So if possible, switch to softer, warmer lighting or use a desk lamp that’s easy on the eyes. Natural light is great, too, so if you can, set your workspace up near a window.

Now let’s talk about clutter. A messy desk can be mentally exhausting and make it harder to focus. So take just a few minutes to tidy up your space.

Clear away any unnecessary items, organize your papers, and maybe add something that makes you feel good, like a small plant or photo you love.

“Leaders bleed, period.” – Silvia Young

Temperature is another factor. Some people get cold more easily on their periods, while others get too warm. So if you’re feeling chilly, keep a cozy blanket nearby. If you’re feeling hot, a small fan might help.

The goal is to make your space as comfortable as possible so you’re not distracted by physical discomfort.

And lastly, consider adding a few period-friendly items to your workspace. A heating pad that plugs in near your desk can be a lifesaver for cramps and body aches, and having some water and healthy snacks on deck can keep you nourished and hydrated without having to get up constantly.

Point is, make small adjustments to your work environment to create a space that supports you through your period so you stay comfortable, focused, and as productive as can be.

SECRET #7: DO SOME GENTLE MOVEMENT

When you’re on your period, the last thing you might feel like doing is getting up and moving around. But hear me out!

Gentle movement can actually make you feel a lot better. We’re not talking about hitting the gym for an intense workout (unless that’s your thing), but rather simple, easy movements that help ease discomfort and boost your energy.

Start with something as simple as stretching. When you’re sitting at your desk, take a few moments to stretch out your neck, shoulders, and back. These areas tend to get tight, especially if you’re already dealing with cramps.

“Know that what seems really hard today, with good practice and consistency, will be a piece of cake later.” – Massy Arias

A quick stretch can truly do wonders for releasing tension and helping you feel more relaxed.

Also, if you can, get up and take a short walk. Even just a 5-minute stroll around the house, office, or apartment to get your blood flowing and lift your mood.

Plus, it’s a great way to clear your head if you’re feeling a bit foggy or overwhelmed. Walking outside is even better if you can manage it – fresh air and a change of scenery can be incredibly refreshing!

Another option is to do some gentle yoga. There’s specific yoga poses that are great for relieving period discomfort, like child’s pose or cat cow. These movements are all about stretching and relaxing your body without putting too much strain on it.

You can do a quick yoga session in the morning or as a break during the day to help you stay grounded and comfy.

And if you’re really not feeling up to much, even just some deep breathing exercises can help. Focus on taking slow, deep breaths, which can calm your nervous system and easy any anxiety or stress you might be feeling.

The key here is to listen to your body. Gentle movement isn’t about pushing yourself. It’s about finding small ways to stay active that actually make you feel better.

And when you feel better, you feel way more productive.

SECRET #8: USE TECHNOLOGY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

When you’re on your period, staying organized and focused can feel like an uphill battle. But that’s where technology can really come to the rescue!

We’re surrounded by tools and apps designed to make life easier, so why not use them to help you stay on track during this time of the month?

First off, let’s talk about task management apps. Whether you’re a fan of Trello, Todoist, Notion, Monday.com, or something else, these apps are great for breaking down your tasks into manageable chunks.

On days when you’re not feeling 100%, it can be super helpful to see your tasks laid out clearly. You can prioritize what absolutely needs to get done and push less urgent tasks to another day.

“Life is too complicated not to be orderly.” – Martha Stewart

Plus, there’s something satisfying about ticking off a task, even if it’s a small one!

Now if focusing is a struggle, consider using a focus timer app like Forest or Focus Keeper: Productive Timer (which is also a website!). These tools help you work in short, focused bursts with breaks in between.

It’s a great way to manage your energy and avoid burnout, especially if you’re feeling more tired than usual. And with apps like Forest, you can even “grow” a virtual tree for every completed focus session – how fun is that?!

Next, let’s talk communication. If you’re feeling drained, take advantage of voice-to-text features on your phone and computer. Instead of typing out long emails or messages, just speak your thoughts and let the technology do the work.

It’s a small hack, but it can save you tons of energy.

The Productivity Flow how to be productive during your period

And don’t forget about calendar apps, too! If you know your period is coming up, you can block out time for yourself in advance.

Schedule lighter tasks and some self-care time so you don’t end up overcommitting. Most calendar apps let you set reminders so you can also use this feature to remind yourself to take a break, hydrate, or even move around a bit.

And finally, period tracking apps like Flo aren’t just about tracking your cycle. They can also help you plan around it.

By knowing when you’re likely to feel your best and when you might need a bit more downtime, you can schedule your work accordingly.

These apps can also give you insight into how your body typically reacts during your cycle, making it easier to prepare.

By using tech to your advantage, you can take some of the pressure off and manage your time and energy more effectively during your period.

It’s all about making life a little easier so you can focus on what matters most without getting overwhelmed.

SECRET #9: PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION & FLEXIBILITY

When I’m on my period, I know I can get really frustrated if I’m not as productive as usual. It’s something I’ve been really working on lately. And I’m sure you can relate!

But here’s the truth: sometimes, our bodies just need a little extra care, and that’s okay.

This is where practicing self-compassion and being flexible with yourself really comes into play.

First off, remind yourself that it’s perfectly normal to have days where you’re not firing on all cylinders. Your body is going through a lot, and expecting yourself to perform at 100% every single day is just unrealistic.

“People often ask me how I stay so motivated and energized. I could tell you I try to eat healthy foods and sleep well at night, but the real answer is grace.” – Lara Casey

Instead of being hard on yourself, try being your own biggest cheerleader. Give yourself credit for what you are able to accomplish, even if it’s just getting out of bed and handling the basics.

Flexibility is really key here. Maybe you had a super productive day planned, but you wake up feeling drained and crampy. It’s okay to adjust your plans.

Shift some tasks to later in the week, or focus on smaller, more manageable goals for the day. The important thing is to stay adaptable and not let a change of plans throw you off.

Self-compassion means also knowing when to take a break. If you need to step away from your work for a bit, do it without guilt.

Whether that’s a ten-minute nap, a relaxing bath, or just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, giving yourself permission to rest can actually help you come back more focused and ready to tackle what’s next.

The Productivity Flow productivity during period

And remember – productivity isn’t just about how much you get done. Productivity is about taking care of yourself so you can continue to show up, not just for work but for everything else in your life, too.

By practicing self-compassion and staying flexible with your plans, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success – even on the days when your period is making things harder.

So go easy on yourself. You’re doing great, and sometimes just getting through the day is enough.

CONCLUSION

I don’t need to tell you that navigating your period while trying to stay productive is a damn big challenge. But here’s what we so often forget: it’s all about working with your body, not against it.
