Ah self-doubt. That pesky little voice in our heads that loves to question our abilities and make us second-guess ourselves. It’s like having a tiny backseat driver joining your journey of life.

Here’s the thing: self-doubt is a common part of being human. It doesn’t discriminate! It affects people from all walks of life in all kinds of way. The key, though, is to not let is control us.

In order to overcome self-doubt and move forward, we gotta recognize that self-doubt is often irrational and unfounded. It’s our job to challenge those doubtful thoughts, to question their validity, and to remind ourselves of our strengths and past successes.

That’s why this blog first explains where self-doubt comes from, then why substituting self-doubt with curiosity really works. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know how to substitute self-doubt with these 3 questions:

  1. How can I?
  2. What can I learn?
  3. What if?

And by the way, this blog definitely covers tips and tricks that you’ll want to save for later! So do yourself a favor and click that button below, enter your info, then check your email to download the FREE GUIDE with the 3 questions to overcome self-doubt immediately!

Alrighty, let’s begin!

SELF-DOUBT EXPLAINED

To really overcome self-doubt, it’s super helpful to know where it stems from so you can slowly (but surely) remove causes out of your life.

To no one’s surprise, self-doubt typically comes from within. It often sneaks its way into our minds due to a variety of reasons – the 4 most common being:

  1. Comparison
  2. The past
  3. Fear of judgement
  4. Perfectionist tendencies

The common denominator all 4 of these causes have is that they’re all in your head, manufactured by your own thoughts and self-limiting beliefs. But let’s go a little deeper into each one so you can determine which one(s) you relate to the most.

The Productivity Flow 4 causes of self doubt

COMPARISON

One major culprit is our good ol’ friend comparison. We live in a world where it’s ridiculously easy to compare ourselves to others, thanks to social media and the constant highlight reels of people’s lives.

We see others achieving great things, and we start doubting our own abilities, wondering, “Am I good enough? Will I ever measure up?”

It’s like playing an endless game that we can never win.

THE PAST

Another source of self-doubt can be past experiences. Maybe we’ve faced failures or setbacks before, and those experiences linger in our minds like stubborn stains.

They create a sort of mental baggage that whispers, “Remember when you messed up? You’ll probably mess up again!”

It’s like having am uncomfortable movie scene playing on repeat in the back of our minds, undermining our confidence.

“The difference between winning and losing is…not quitting.” – Walt Disney

FEAR OF JUDGEMENT

Then there’s the all-too-familiar fear of judgement. We humans are social creatures, and we tend to worry about what others think of us.

The fear of being criticized can make us doubt our decisions and actions, even if – deep down – we know they’re perfectly fine.

It’s like having an overly critical imaginary audience following us around, ready to pounce on any misstep.

PERFECTIONIST TENDENCIES

Lastly, our perfectionist tendencies can be a major contributor to our self-doubt. We can set impossibly high standards for ourselves, demanding nothing less than perfection even though that’s never possible.

So when we inevitably fall short (because, let’s face it, perfection is a myth), we doubt our worth and capabilities.

It’s like being our own harshest critic, never cutting ourselves any slack.

SUBSTITUTE SELF-DOUBT WITH CURIOSITY

So out of the 4 reasons explained above, which one do you fall victim to the most?

I struggle a ton with perfectionist tendencies, but the fear of judgment is for sure a close second. Take a moment to reflect and answer honestly!

Once you acknowledge where your biggest crux is, you can take the steps to remove it from your habits.

No matter what’s causing your self-doubt, though, one of the first steps you gotta take is to substitute doubtful thoughts with curiosity.

“The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having it use you. If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, your life controls you.” – Tony Robbins

Curiosity is like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds of self-doubt. It’s the spark that ignites learning, growth, and discovery. By embracing curiosity, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and perspectives.

This helps us approach challenges with a sense of wonder and excitement instead of dread or fear.

Here’s why substituting self-doubt can be so powerful:

  1. Shifts focus to new possibilities
  2. Fuels a growth mindset
  3. Encourages exploration
  4. Sparks resilience
  5. Cultivates confidence
  6. Fosters joy

The Productivity Flow why substitute self doubt with curiosity

SHIFTS FOCUS TO NEW POSSIBILITIES

Self-doubt often fixates on our perceived limitations, making us questions what we cannot do or achieve rather than what we can.

Curiosity, on the other hand, shifts our focus to what we can learn, explore, and discover. It helps us see newfound potential, even in the face of uncertainty.

FUELS A GROWTH MINDSET

Asking questions nurtures a growth mindset, which is the belief that we can develop and improve on our abilities through effort and learning.

Instead of accepting self-doubt as a fixed state, curiosity engages us to see challenges as opportunities for growth. It helps us approach situations with a willingness to learn, adapt, and evolve.

ENCOURAGES EXPLORATION

Getting curious drives us to seek answers and explore new ideas and alternatives.

When we replace self-doubt with questions, we become active learners and seekers of knowledge. We become open to new experiences, ideas, and skills that can help us move forward.

SPARKS RESILIENCE

Curiosity is a powerful motivator. When we approach difficulties with a curious lens, we become more engaged and resilient.

“We all have self-doubt. You don’t deny it, but you also don’t capitulate to it. You embrace it.” – Kobe Bryant

We view setbacks as learning experiences rather than reasons to doubt ourselves. Curiosity helps us maintain a positive outlook and keeps us motivated to push through obstacles.

CULTIVATES CONFIDENCE

Embracing curiosity nurtures a sense of self-belief and confidence. When we tackle challenges with a curious mindset, we acknowledge that we have the capacity to learn, switch it up, and find solutions.

This belief in our own abilities builds self-confidence and diminishes the grip of self-doubt.

FOSTERS JOY

Being curious brings a sense of joy and wonder into our lives. It encourages us to explore the world with a childlike curiosity, finding fascination in the simplest of things.

By embracing curiosity, we infuse our lives with a sense of excitement and adventure, creating a positive and fulfilling mindset.

So instead of letting self-doubt hold us back, let’s invite curiosity to take the reins. The next section dives into 3 questions we can ask to embrace the unknown with wonder, approach obstacles with a growth mindset, and seek knowledge plus experiences that’ll move us forward.

3 QUESTIONS TO OVERCOME SELF-DOUBT

As noted above, substituting self-doubt with curiosity can be a transformative shift in mindset. So let’s dive into my 3 favorite questions to substitute self-doubt with:

  1. How can I?
  2. What can I learn?
  3. What if?

Now all 3 questions have some things in common. First, they all push you to take action. Second, they help you cultivate a growth mindset. And thirdly, they are key in boosting your confidence so you can move forward.

I dive deeper into each below, so keep on reading!

HOW CAN I?

When we find ourselves stuck in the quicksand of self-doubt, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel like there’s no way out. Negative thoughts and uncertainties swirl around in our heads, making it hard to see a clear path forward.

But that’s where the magic of “How can I?” comes in.

Asking yourself “How can I?” shifts your focus from dwelling on self-doubt to seeking solutions and taking action. It takes you out of the realm of self-defeat and into the realm of possibilities.

By posing this question, you open your mind up to new perspectives and potential strategies for overcoming your doubts.

How, you may wonder?

First and foremost, asking “How can I?” acknowledges that there is a way forward – even if it may not be immediately obvious. It implies that there are steps you can take, resources you can tap into, or knowledge you can acquire to address the root causes of your self-doubt.

It basically empowers you to take an active role in finding a solution.

“One percent doubt is zero percent faith.” – Oprah Winfrey

Secondly, “How can I?” encourages you to shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. A fixed mindset believes that our abilities and talents are set in stone, while a growth mindset believes that you can learn and do anything with enough effort.

So by asking this question, you’re embracing the belief that you have the capacity to grow, learn, and overcome your doubt and anything else that comes your way.

Third, when you pose this question you also open yourself up to seeking help and support. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to face your doubts alone.

Whether it’s seeking advice from a mentor, talking to a supportive friend, or even seeking professional guidance, reaching out for assistance can provide you with a fresh perspective and insights that can help you navigate your doubts.

And lastly, “How can I?” pushes you to take action. It propels you towards finding practical steps you can take to address you doubts head-on.

By breaking down your self-doubt into manageable pieces and asking yourself how you can tackle each one, you’re more likely to make progress and regain confidence in yourself.

You know, learning this changed my life. But I had to remind myself to get curious when facing doubt, which you’ll probably have to do, too. All the more reason to save this info for later when you need it most!

WHAT CAN I LEARN?

When self-doubt starts creeping in, it can feel like we’re trapped in a cycle of negativity and the unknown. We question our abilities, doubt our worth, and feel stuck in a state of self-defeat.

But asking yourself “What can I learn?” flips the script and creates a whole new world of options.

By posing this question, you shift your focus from dwelling on what you don’t know or can’t do to acknowledging that there’s always room for growth and improvement. It’s an invitation to adopt a curious and open mindset, where you actively seek opportunities to expand your skills.

Why does this question work? Let me explain…

When you ask “What can I learn?” you essentially tell yourself that self-doubt is not a permanent state but just a temporary barrier that you can move past. It reminds you that your current limitations are not fixed, but there’s just areas you gotta evolve in.

“Confront your fear and turn your mental blocks into learning blocks.” – Dr. Roopleen

Second, this question encourages you to approach self-doubt with a growth mindset. Instead of viewing your abilities as fixed traits, you recognize that your talents can be developed through effort, practice, and learning. By asking what you can learn, you embrace the idea that you have the capacity to improve and overcome your doubts.

Additionally, asking “What can I learn?” helps you reframe self-doubt as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. It shifts the focus from dwelling on the negative aspects to seeking valuable lessons and insights from the experience. It transforms self-doubt into self-discovery.

And we can’t forget that this question also empowers you to take action, just like asking “How can I?”. It prompts you to actively seek learning experiences – whether it’s through books, courses, coaches, mentors, or hand-on opportunities.

It encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone, embrace new challenges, and acquire the confidence needed to overcome your doubts.

The Productivity Flow how to overcome self doubt

WHAT IF?

When self-doubt sets in, it’s often accompanied by a barrage of negative thoughts, self-limiting beliefs, and worst-case-scenarios. We imagine all of the things that could go wrong and how we might fail or disappoint ourselves and others.

However! By harnessing the power of “What if?” in a more positive way, we can turn the tables on self-doubt and excite ourselves about our potential.

Here’s why you gotta throw away that negative “What if?” and replace it with the positive version:

Asking “What if?” in an optimistic way shifts our mindset from a place of fear and negativity to one of curiosity and opportunities. It’s about exploring the potential for positive outcomes and reframing our doubts as opportunities for growth and success.

Secondly, asking the positive version makes us challenge our negative assumptions and limitations. Instead of asking, “What if I fail?” we can ask, “What if I succeed beyond my wildest dreams?”

This opens a whole new world of possibilities and allow us to imagine the best-case scenarios rather than fixating on the worst.

“I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.” – Louisa May Alcott

Most importantly, though, asking a positive “What if?” encourages us to envision a future where our doubts have been overcome and our goals have been achieved. It helps us focus on the potential rewards and benefits that await us if we take action and believe in ourselves. It fuels our motivation and empowers us to push through and strive for greatness.

On the other hand, asking “What if?” in a negative way can perpetuate self-doubt and keep us trapped in a cycle of fear and feeling stuck. Negative “What if?” questions tend to focus on the worst possible outcomes and reinforce insecurities.

For example, asking, “What if everything goes wrong?” or, “What if I embarrass myself?” only serves to amplify our fears and erode our confidence further. It keeps us stuck in a loop of negative thinking and can paralyze us from taking any action.

The key to using “What if?” as a positive tool is to reframe the question in a way that inspires hope, curiosity, and possibility.

Instead of dwelling on negative “what ifs” shift your focus to positive alternatives. A few of my favorite positive “What if?” questions are:

  • What if I succeed?
  • What if I exceed my own expectations?
  • What if this turns out to be the best decision I ever made?

CONCLUSION

If you only take one thing away from this blog please let it be this: self-doubt comes from within, so if you have the power to create it, then you have the power to overcome it.

Try your best to remove triggers for self-doubt, such as:

  • Comparison
  • Dwelling on the past
  • Fear of judgement
  • Perfectionist tendencies

And the next time self-doubt tries to bring you down, remember that it’s just a pesky companion trying to throw you off track. Take a deep breath, tell it to take a backseat, and substitute your self-doubt with curiosity by asking yourself 1, 2, or all 3 of these empowering questions:

  1. How can I?
  2. What can I learn?
  3. What if?
