We both know that working from home can feel like freedom and frustration all rolled into one.

You sit down with a clear plan for the day…and within minutes, the pings start. A Slack message. A text from a client. A toddler meltdown. A quick scroll that turns into a 20-minute rabbit hole.

Suddenly, you’re scattered, your to-do list looks untouched, and you’re wondering, “Why do I feel so behind when I’ve been ‘on’ all day?”

Here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:

Interruptions aren’t just an inconvenience. They’re energy drains.

“Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management. Balance means making choices, and enjoying those choices.” – Betsy Jacobson

Every time you’re pulled away from a task, your brain has to work twice as hard to refocus. That’s called attention residue, and it adds up!

You’re not lazy. You’re not unmotivated. You’re just operating in a system that doesn’t account for real life.

And that’s exactly where the buffer block comes in!

Because balance doesn’t come from rigid routines or perfect focus. It comes from building in space to respond to life as it happens.

So in this blog post, I’ll walk you through:

  • Why interruptions zap your focus and increase mental fatigue
  • What a buffer block is and how it can protect your energy
  • How to customize a buffer block to fit your real-life schedule so you can finally get things done without burning out

This isn’t about doing more. It’s about creating space for what matters.

Let’s start small, one shift at a time.

Oh, and by the way, I created a FREE BUFFER BLOCK BUILDER just for you! HOW INTERRUPTIONS DRAIN YOUR FOCUS, ENERGY & PRODUCTIVITY

If you’ve ever ended the work-from-home day feeling mentally fried, even though your to-do list is staring back at you, there’s a good chance it wasn’t the work that drained you.

It was the interruptions. And not just the obvious ones, like a phone call or that loud neighbor.

It’s the micro-distractions: the notification you quickly glanced at, the Slack message you answered mid-task, the urge to check your email while writing a report.

The Productivity Flow #1 secret to handle interruptions while working from home

Here’s what’s actually happening to your brain when you get interrupted:

Every time your attention is pulled away, your brain experiences something called attention residue – aka a leftover trace of the previous task that makes it harder to focus on the next one.

As if your task’s residue was left on your brain, blocking your brain’s attention on the new task.

Think of it like mental clutter that piles up, even if you’re technically still working.

On top of that, your brain is constantly burning energy just to switch gears. Studies show it can take up to 23 minutes to fully refocus after an interruption.

Twenty-three minutes!

And when this happens again and again and again throughout the day, it’s no wonder we feel scattered, behind, and completely spent by 4 pm.

But here’s the part I really want you to hear:

You’re not bad at focusing. Your brain just wasn’t designed to operate in a nonstop ping-and-pivot environment.

“When we clutter our lives with imagined obligations, unnecessary activities, and distractions that only kill time, we dilute the power of our lives.” – Anne Katherine

This is why most traditional productivity hacks fall short. They don’t take into account your mental bandwidth or the real-world interruptions that come with working from home.

But that’s where mindful structure can change everything.

When you build your day with space for interruptions on purpose, you’re not falling behind. You’re creating a system that honors your energy, your rhythm, and your reality.

This is one of the most impactful shifts that allows my coaching clients to go from reactive and overwhelmed to calm, focused, and in control. One micro-adjustment at a time.

THE SECRET TO HANDLE INTERRUPTIONS WHILE WORKING FROM HOME

WHY BUFFER BLOCKS ARE THE MINDFUL SOLUTION YOUR ROUTINE IS MISSING

Here’s what most productivity advice gets wrong:

It assumes you can control everything.

But when you’re working from home – whether you’re running a business, leading a team, or juggling client calls between loads of laundry – interruptions are inevitable.

The goal isn’t to avoid interruptions or distractions completely. It’s to stop letting them control your day.

This is where the buffer block comes into play!

The Productivity Flow how to stop letting interruptions run your day

A buffer block is a dedicated window of time in your schedule (often 15-60 minutes) set aside on purpose to handle the unplanned.

It’s not a luxury. It’s a system.

A system that gives your brain breathing room instead of expecting it to operate under constant pressure.

Let me be clear: a buffer block isn’t just blank space. It’s protected time for:

  • The email that needs a quick reply but shouldn’t derail your deep work
  • The neighbor that pops by unannounced
  • The mental clutter that builds throughout the day
  • The “I forgot to…” tasks that show up at the worst moments

Instead of reacting to these things as they happen, you’re telling your brain: “Not now, but I’ve set aside time for that.”

That one shift can reduce mental load, decision fatigue, and the guilt spiral that comes from falling off-track. It’s a micro-boundary with macro impact.

I’ve personally added buffer blocks after my morning deep work hour, after my afternoon walk, and at the end of the workday. I went from ending each day flustered and behind to feeling caught up and present for my life after 5 pm.

“Say ‘no’ to distraction so you can say ‘yes’ to your destiny.” – Thema Bryant

It isn’t about adding more to the day. It’s about being intentional with the time you already have.

Cuz that’s what this is really about! Mindful productivity is never about doing more. It’s about protecting your energy so you can do what matters most.

So don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to look for space. Create space ahead of time.

Up next, I’ll show you exactly how to build your own buffer block and adjust it based on your day, your energy, and your work style so it actually works for you, not against you.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR BUFFER BLOCK: STRATEGIES THAT ACTUALLY WORK

Here’s the thing about buffer blocks: they’re not one-size-fits-all.

What works beautifully for one person might feel like a waste of time or performative for another. And that’s the beauty of this strategy! This isn’t a rigid routine. You get to design a flexible system around how you work best.

The Productivity Flow 5 time blocks to handle interruptions

Think of your buffer block as a flexible container. One that helps you respond to your day instead of reacting to it. You can use it to transition between tasks or meetings, handle unexpected interruptions, or simply pause and reset your nervous system.

The key is to be intentional.

Instead of defaulting to scrolling or squeezing in “just one more email,” ask yourself: “What would actually support me in this moment?”

Here’s a few ways my coaching clients have customized their buffer blocks:

  • Rest and regulate: take 5-10 minutes to breathe, stretch, step outside, or listen to music. These micro-breaks aren’t indulgent. They fuel your focus.
  • Prep and transition: use the time to review notes before your next meeting, close browser tabs, or jot down thoughts so you’re not carrying mental clutter into your next task. Transitions are when overwhelm builds up, so make them intentional!
  • Catch up (without guilt): some days just don’t go as planned. Your buffer block becomes your built-in safety net. Instead of falling behind or letting one interruption throw off your whole flow, you’ve already created space to handle it.
  • Mindful movement: do a quick walk, stretch routine, or posture reset (especially if you’ve been sitting for hours!). It re-energizes your body and reboots your mind.
  • Creative reset: doodle, journal, or brainstorm an idea that’s been simmering in the back of your mind. It’s amazing what surfaces when you give your brain space to breathe.

Remember: the goal is NOT to squeeze more into your day! The goal is to create breathing room so your brain and body can function at their best without burning out.

When you build your workday with care, you’re not just being productive. You’re being sustainable. Strategic. And in alignment with your future self.

“It’s how we spend our time here and now that really matters. If you are fed up with the way you have come to interact with time, change it.” – Marcia Wieder

So try different approaches. Notice what helps you feel more grounded and focused. And then protect that buffer like it’s part of the work – because it is!

HOW TO AVOID COMMON BUFFER BLOCK MISTAKES

Let me be blunt: a buffer block only works if you use it well.

It’s not just a fancy name for downtime or extra calendar fluff. It’s a strategic tool for energy regulation, mental reset, and sustainable productivity.

And like any tool, it can backfire if you’re not intentional about how you use it.

The Productivity Flow 4 common buffer block mistakes and how to avoid them

Sometimes what starts as a well-meaning break turns into mindless scrolling, multitasking, or “filler” time that leaves you feeling more scattered.

Other times, the buffer block quietly disappears altogether because you feel guilty for not being “productive enough.”

When you notice that’s happening, you gotta course correct.

So here’s a few common buffer block mistakes to look out for and, more importantly, how to course correct:

  • Using it as an overflow, not a buffer. If every buffer block becomes a catch-all for unfinished work, you’re not giving yourself the reset your brain needs. Try protecting at least one block a day for actual recovery, not just pullover.
  • Skipping it when you’re busy. Ironically, the more hectic your day feels, the more you need this space. Skipping it might seem efficient in the moment, but it only increases stress and decision fatigue later on. Even just a 3-minute pause can regulate your nervous system and restore clarity.
  • Filling it with more screen time. Your mind needs contrast, not just a change of a tab. Instead of defaulting to social media or inbox checks, try something sensory: movement, fresh air, music, or a breathwork reset. This re-energizes your brain power!
  • Treating it like wasted time. This one’s big! If you believe rest has to be earned, or that pausing makes you lazy, it’s easy to sabotage the buffer block before it has a chance to support you. But remember: rest is productive! Your brain cannot do deep work without periodic recovery.

The good news? You don’t have to use it perfectly. You just have to use it on purpose.

When you start honoring your buffer blocks as a part of your workflow and daily routine (not a detour from it!), you’ll find yourself more focused, more present, and far less likely to burn out by Friday.

“Distraction wastes our energy; concentration restores it.” – Sharon Salzberg

This is what sustainable productivity looks like: small, intentional shifts that protect your energy and keep you moving forward, one mindful block at a time.

CONCLUSION: STAY FOCUSED & BALANCED DESPITE INTERRUPTIONS

Interruptions are a part of life, especially when you work from home. The goal isn’t to eliminate them completely (cuz let’s be real, that’s not happening!).

The real power lies in learning how to work with the interruptions, not against them.

When you start using buffer blocks with intention, you’re not just managing your time better. You’re protecting your focus, preserving your energy, and building a workday that actually supports your well-being.

You don’t need perfect conditions to be productive.

You just need small, sustainable systems that help you respond to the unexpected without losing your momentum.

So whether it’s a 5-minute meditation between meetings or a 30-minute catch all at the end of your workday, your buffer block is a quiet act of resistance against burnout.

And a bold move towards mindful balance.

And you can use the FREE BUFFER BLOCK BUILDER to plan how to do just that! So here’s your last chance to click that button below, enter your info, then check your email and download the workbook now!
